40 days

The season of Lent is here.  I know you won’t find the word “lent” in the bible, and it is not necessarily a season that Jesus teaches us to participate in each year.  However, there is plenty of good biblical application in the practice of lent.  The most famous example of course is Jesus’ 40 day fast in the wilderness before He began His public ministry.  There are also numerous scriptures that instruct us to deny ourselves and focus on God.  All in all Lent is a time to die a little in order that Christ may raise us to new life… a good practice for any season.

Psalm 131 says “My heart is not proud, LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.  But I have calmed and quieted myself.”

What a beautiful scripture and what a picture of godliness – humble, simple, peaceful, and quiet.  As I have been preparing for the Lent season this is the scripture that I came across, and like a ghost, it has haunted me for several days now.  Perhaps I need a season of quieting down and calming down, in order that I may become more humble.  To put it more simply, I told God that I wanted my life to look more like this scripture, and then I asked Him what I needed to do to make it happen.  He told me I needed to shut up.

So for the next 40 days you won’t find any new posts on this blog.

For the next 40 days you won’t see any tweets from me.

For the next 40 days you won’t see my Facebook status change.

For the next 40 days I’m going to calm and quiet my soul.  I’m going to use the time and energy I regularly use to create noise and instead create stillness.  Instead of having thoughts and writing words for you to read, I’m going to use that time to hear from you and pray for you.  Instead of living in the middle of the world, I’m pulling away from it.  In the end, I’ll be more sure of who God is, who I am, and what exactly He wants to say through me.

There’s no doubt this will be difficult to me, but it is what I feel called to do.  I hope you will join me:

1. Participate in Lent this year – what is something you need to spend some time away from (or give up forever)?

2. Let me pray for you.  I’m going to have a lot of time on my hands, so I’d love to use that time to pray for you!  Just comment your prayer requests and they will be emailed to me.  Or just email me directly: thewriterscloset@gmail.com

3. Pray for me as I strive for godliness through humility.  This is not going to be easy.

See you in days!
